Automotive Trends: Start-Stop Technology

Global adoption of start-stop vehicles is on the rise

Around the world, there is a general desire to reduce greenhouse gases and improve fuel utilization. Government officials have responded and enacted various new legislation. To respond to these new laws, car manufacturers are employing many strategies such as developing pure electrical vehicles, downsizing the internal combustion engine and bringing on start-stop technologies.

The shift to start-stop technology requires a more robust battery design

In the start-stop situation, the lead acid battery is called to operate in a partial state of charge and may never see an overcharge condition. The battery still must start the engine but at a much higher frequency while simultaneously powering all the auxiliary devices without interruption.

Motive Power Trends: Combating Opportunity Charging

Changes in forklift battery working patterns require improved battery design

In the past, typical forklift batteries were employed to work a full day and allow for a full charge overnight. In order to maximize battery productivity, warehouse operators are now instituting procedures where batteries are charged whenever the machine is idle. Additionally, batteries are used over a longer period of working hours. This is creating a seemingly constant operation in partial-state-of-charge -- rarely deep cycled, never overcharged.

As battery usage patterns shift, technical challenges must be addressed to maintain battery reliability.

Key Challenges:

1. Acid Stratification
2. Charge Acceptance
3. Water Loss / Grid Corrosion

Stationary / Specialty Trends : Innovation Opportunity

Battery Environment & Accessibility Play A Major Role

Telecom & renewable energy batteries are largely found in remote, outdoor locations, which means the physical elements, like heat, can impact the battery performance. Additionally, the remote location of many of these batteries make it difficult to maintain and manage.

Innovation opportunity

1. Lower Maintenance

2. Better Cycling

3. Improved Charge Acceptance
